Virgin Media data breach

What is it with 2008 and companies losing data on CD's?

The latest company to lose data this way is Virgin Media, they have lost a CD which was un-encrypted and contained the bank account details, names and addresses of 3000 customers.

More information can be found here: Virgin Media data loss

What more can I say, its Friday night - maybe I will come back and add a rant to this post tomorrow :-)

It is not just Compact Discs, leaving hardcopy material marked 'Top Secret' on a public trains seems to be in vogue too. The lack of procedures that are enforced and hence followed seems to be the norm almost everywhere. Why is it that companies supply employees with laptops and cd-burners and then act surprised when something like this happens. Most staff working in companies don't need internet access, cd-burners, laptops, usb sticks and other technologies that encourage the proliferation of sensitive data onto unsecured media. Lock up your data in a secured data center and use the well worn access principle of need to know. After all too much information is just a distraction, unlike this post of course!

I could not agree more Conor! Bring back the mainframes and destroy all the printers ;-)
